B&H Testing & Review!!!!

Hey guys Chad here and I'm finally getting around to a full review of the new B&H clod tires manufactured by rc4wd. I apologize for the delay but I had been extremely busy and it felt like I was always waiting for parts haha.

But onto the Details!:
The tires were designed and created so that clod guys would no longer need to spend hours on end dremeling stockclod/stockusa-1 tires to gain traction in offroad conditions. I have personally sat down with a dremel for upwards of 8 hours shaving a set of stock clod tires, so the addition of a company like rc4wd listening to customer advise and willing to offer a specific product to us clod guys really shows how hard they are working to support us. These B&H clod tires retail on www.rc4wd.com for about $35 a pair and come included with nice, soft, clod sized foams. The rubber compound used on these is second to none and should provide great traction on a variety of surfaces for an extended period of time. They will fit on any standard clod/txt/usa-1 wheel as well as the billet aluminum wheels for the clod as well.

For the testing of these tires I was going to mount them up on my very sucessful ripper pro chassis and head to the 2nd rcmtra pro-mt point series event to give them a whirl. here you can see my truck transformed with the addition of the B&H tires which took the place of the trusty imex pullers for this event.

Concerns:
My initial thought about these tires was that they were too tall, and too wide. In my opinion the need of a tire larger than stock for racing was unprefered. I can understand where rc4wd was leaning though because I realize not only do the racing guys want these tires, but the general bashers are drawn to them as well because of their aggressive look. So in the case of a basher the added ground clearance will probably contribute to a little more fun as they would not get hung up as often as a smaller tire. My next issue with the tires was how tall the lugs themselves were. Not only were they angled, but they were raised quite a bit compared to the lug height on a normal cut clod/usa-1 tire. By shortening the lugs the tire would achieve more forward traction due to a more ridgid lug that would dig in rather than fold back. Another performance aspect that would benefit to having a smaller overall tire with shorter lugs would be a huge weight advantage. As the tires are they weigh just under the weight of a stock clod tire and are significantly heavier than your average shaved clod tire.

ONTO THE PICTURES!

here you can see how the rc4wd tires dwarf the imex pullers

And here they are placed against an old Amark pin style tire. The Amarks are very wide so any hint that the rc4wd's are narrow is far off haha. The rc4wd's are all around large and provide a huge footprint.

Now for the shots that matter... The pictures of the B&H tires and how the stack up to custom shaved stock clod tires that they are in line to replace. You'll notice how the
rc4wd versions are only slightly larger but its easy to see how oversized the lugs really are when matched up to shaved stockers.

Now here's a pic of the B&H tires up against a tape measure for a little size reference

PERFORMANCE:
On the track these rc4wd tires did exactly what I thought they'd do. The race was held in a wet grassy area and these tires gave up nothing out of the corners. Upon landing off the jumps the soft tires, compared with soft foams, gave a plush bounce free landing which allowed me to pick up on the throttle faster than the competition. I ran them up against my cut stock clod tires in order to compare and found that the stock clod tires actually dug a little better. The way I see it though is that even if rc4wd keeps the oversized lugs which may not perform as well as cut stock clod lugs, the rc4wd tires will still be better than everything else openly available as they finished 2nd in that race behind only my truck with the cut stock tires.

Here are some action shots from the event.

Overall I was pretty pleased with the way the rc4wd tires turned out and they are definitly going to save people a ton of time shaving tires. In the end I wish they were a smaller tire to better suite the racing side because of how many other options are already available to "bashers" but they are a high quality tire either way and I look forward to putting more time on them. I'll be sure to update if I have any issues or figure anything new out about them as I continue to test.

Renegade, thanks for the great review.

So far the demand for clod size tire is very small. Once the sales pickup a little more, we will get back and work on the smaller size of the B&H tires.

RC4wd,

If I may comment here, I agree with Ball Racing. Yes producing the "smaller B&H" tires would be great news! However from the postings I have seen on the message boards over the years when other companies considered or were rumored to be interested in producing Clod sized tires, most of the Clod/TXT-1 owners wanted a stock Clod Sized tire to begin with. A plug and play tire if you will.

From the pics posted here we still do not have that. So if your waiting for the sales of these tires to pick up before producing the tires that should have been produced to satisfy the true desires of Clod/TXT-1 owners or should we say the market, then your company and the potential buyers will be waiting for a long time. For some of us that wait began in 1988.

As this great review has pointed out the tire bars are over sized. The tire is over sized and therefore does not meet the desires of the potential buyers. Thus the tire will still need to be shaved to achieve the proper dimensions that have been so desired. Apparently this project goal was missed, as the end result of the finished product still requires its buyers to shave them to the proper size.

As you well know as a business, when a product misses the mark of its intended audience/market its sales subsequently are hurt.

I hope as a potential customer with four trucks (2 clod and 2 TXT-1's) that your company will consider producing the desired stock Clod sized version of these wonderful looking tires as they could potentially be a hot product for your company. Thank you for reading (listening) this unsolicited point of view from a past customer.

Thank you,
Ceasar

In my opinion the redesigned tire should be even smaller than you average "cut" tire. The first version could be dubbed the "B&H XL" which would suite bashers and anyone else wanted that big tire. And the second version could be a "B&H-R" which would be a smaller, lighter, alternative that would offer better performance than the other options and with enough input, hopefully better than the cut tires they'd be replacing. I'd want to see the second version around the size of an imex puller/baja to give more clearance and acceleration but that's just M.O.

I agree, Chad, it looks more "scale" for those of us that are ate up with detail :D, for the tire to be shorter.
Most of the bodies are not really 1/10th of the real thing, I think a 5.750 inch tire or so would be nice... Narrower also.

But thats incorporating a shorter lug, that is sharpended, not just the same whole thing again just shorter ..

I cut half the height off the lugs of the B&H and now its about the height of a Kyosho.

But our rims are not scale either, so that messes with things too, but thats just from a detail, not a performer view point.

It could lose alot of weight in the backside of the cut it has now, it's way long...
And the bead area can be reduced in thickness almost half...

I cut a set down to get the height right, but the rubber is very different from a clod or USA-1 tire, it "grains" up real bad, and its hard to cut, and make look smooth.
The rubber doesn't dust up fast, it "tears" like, and comes off in big pieces..
It's not rubber like a imex, a clod or a usa-1..

I am trying to make a set look like the import tires they are running now,
But I think they will look too rough for by finiky ways:willy

This is what rc4wd needs to know. That is exactly what i'd like to see the second time around.

Personally I feel the threads should be much like a stock Clod tires thread and not crossover each other & also that the ends of the thread from the sidewall of the tire should be much more curved rather than triangle/pointed like. I think a set of shaved Clod tires would be better to go off of rather than a USA-1 tire.

Well, they have less tread angle than usa-1, but they do cross over ,, more than a usa-1.

We sent a usa-1 tire because when we race dirt drag- the cut kyosho tracked truer for us than a clod, and a usa-1 is much lighter than a clod.

I can not speak for carpet.

Another reason we sent a usa-1 tire, is because you can't get them anymore, so we wanted replica's, I can buy clod tires all day long still...
And the usa-1 replicated the firestone tire, and the clod- the good year tire.
I make alot of big-foot replicas and need tires to have the look.

well if the threads are to crossover each other they should at least be more curved on the carcus of the tire vs being straightly in an angle and same goes for the end of the threads going over the sidewall, more curved vs pointy triangle like.
