AR60 axles with diffs?

I bought some axles and the HPI diff kit with the 2 shims not long ago. I can't find anywhere if I should use the shims and if so, where? Also, which way should the diff be facing in the axle? I know it fits both ways but is one better than the other? I put everything together and it feels like the gears are dragging a little bit in the axle and louder compared to stock with a locker. Also, should I have to force the axle housing ends on at all or should they just slip right over the screw holes? I managed to buy a "new take-off" set of axles with one of the chubs glued on, so I haven't quite gotten to the second axle with my diff parts and want to be ready for when I do. Thanks guys, any tips/suggestions are appreciated. Nick

Not sure whats going on with that. If you look at the ring gear, its even concaved for that shim and gear! Its weird because I just did this yesterday my self in my Axial build. All went back together like it should.

front axle gear goes on the long side
rear the gear goes on the short side of the axle

shim placement

Note gear to long side on front

Oh, I thought you were trying to figure out the (2) shims in the HPI diff gearset, and where they go like in the pic here! If you look, one is in the diff housing with the other in the ring gear concave!

Thanks guys, I did mean that nitrorulz, the HPI shims with the diff set. I put them just like that when I put everything together and it just didn't work. I couldn't get the axles far enough in for the plastic axle ends to go on and the holes to line up on the axle tube... No idea what the deal is.

I just finished doing my rear about 1/2 hour ago! Did front yesterday, so went ahead and did rear now to see if it will help with my torque twist! I did them just like photo on both front and rear and all is good. Not sure whats going on with yours. When you are pushing the rear "lockouts/axle ends" are you spinning the axle shaft while pushing all that together. Sometimes you have to rotate the axleshaft while pushing that axle end on to get it to seat.

They were only off by a shim width or so. I forgot to put gaskets in, wonder if that makes the difference. Putting them in now so will find out soon...

If you are putting together a stock gear set with the plastic diff housing, then yes, you need the gasket to shim the pinion and ring gear properly.
If you are installing one of the aftermarket diff housings, like the one from GCM, then you don't need the gasket.

My advice, shim the diff gears tight, almost to the point you're not sure they will work.
This is what I do, then I use my cordless drill and an old axle shaft to spin the diff manually. NO oil or grease. Spin them slow then faster and faster. I put a little oil on the shims and shafts to they don't lock up, but on the gear teeth, nothing. I run them for a couple minutes until the gear noise settles down. Then I open the diff back up, clean it out really well, then pack it full of good, high viscosity, synthetic grease. Lucas Red and Tacky or or Rock Lube are my usual go to greases. By shimming them tight, and then wearing them in like that, the teeth are nice and tight, and they won't skip.
The first time you take a jump and come down on the power, if they aren't shimmed tight, you'll know. You will hear the tell tale click click noise, and pretty soon, you'll have a blown up diff.

If you have any questions, let me know. I've built a few of these, some that have lasted in 6s service.

I had this same question as j just bought the same hpi diff set to unlock my ar60s. I put the shims behind the pinion gear. Seems to be fine. Wish there was an exact answere. Bills image shows them going between the bearing and the backside of the ring gear. I wonder if i should take apart and do them that way?!

Hi, can you tell me the part number of the HPI gear set and what else I need to add diffs to my AR60's, thanks!
