There is a lot of different ways to build your tractor. Our chassis is based on a simple gearbox, Haulman's is sort of like a drop box with a driveshaft back to a T-Maxx rearend, and guys have simply used kit parts. I guess the biggest thing you need ask yourself is what do you feel comfortable building? If you are handy with machining you can do what ever you can design and make work. As you are getting into your design be sure to use the NR/CTPA rule book as your guide to make all your dimensions work. If you have any more specific questions feel free to drop me a note at [email protected] or post them up here. Have fun with it and good luck.

By the way if you are in the general area of Northwestern OH you should come to the 25th NR/CTPA World Championships the weekend of October 12th. You will be able to see it all fist hand there.

There are a couple of groups in NY that do RC pulling. One is in Western area near Buffalo and other is near Syracuse area. Where is upstate NY are you? I have some trucks where the center section is just 1" square tubing. You can use a combination of gears / chains to get you the drop that you will need. ServoCity is a good website for gearing suppliers. They are pretty reasonable and ship pretty quick. Look through some of the threads in the build section here and it will show you some of the different options. There are some good build threads if you do to older threads.

I'm 2 hours north of Albany on the border of VT. I'll have to check the website out. Couple of us ordered the TRAXXAS funny cars as rollers on eBay for $48 and going to run them for now. Mount clod tires on mine with a mamba monster on 6s. But I'm going to build one from scratch also. Can never have to many toys lol

I don't know what the gear ratio is in a Traxxas funny car, but I might guess it might not be enough gear.

stock ratio is 4.86 out of the box
That's not even close to drive Clod tires for pulling. You will need a minimum of 20:1 depending on motor.

Too high of a wheel speed is just as bad as too slow. If you run the hitch low enough to keep it from stalling, the wheels would spin too fast to get traction.

Im going to run a castle creations mamba monster can run up to 6s lipo. I can play with all the settings in the esc and make it not so crazy. Its just going to be a couples buddies and me. One of them also ordered the funny car to run so itll be who can make it work the best. Ive got $100 into it ready to roll if that, just doing it for fun im going to rob the electronics out of my other truck when we use them. Its all just for fun but ill have to see what they offer for gears so i can see what i can get the gear ratio at.

So should my goal be to get somewhere around what you said ?

Just to give you an idea what you would have:
2200Kv motor on 6S with 5:1 gearing and Clod wheels would give a theoretical tire ground speed of around 150mph.
The clod tire would balloon out like a pizza cutter and probably blow off the wheel if allowed to ramp up.
Under a pulling load most likely the motor would cog out and not ramp up that far if it can even start to turn at all.
You could run a light sled and do drag pulling I guess, but crash at the speed it would be going and it would be toast.
If you do it, record it. Could be fun to see. :cool

I run a 15# Open I class truck with a 2600Kv 1/8th scale motor on 4S & Clod size wheels with a gearing around 24:1
It will pull around 100# depending on the track.

Is the motor a 2400 or 2200? I tried running one of the castle 2400s in an 8lbs 4x4 and got down to 7:1 before it started cogging. I'm with these guys. Gonna need more gear or like someone else said light sled.

I have a few different options for motors i have a mamba monster 2650kv motor and also have a 1900kv & 2100KV motor in a 550 can. I can always run different batteries don't have to use 6s which will slow will speed down a ton. Ive never got into the pulling before so all info is helpful.
I figured wheel speed would be good but i guess i was wrong im learning. Im still going to try the funny car anyways lol just because its cheap and when im down it can be a self queen if it does not work out. ill post pics up and video after its done
