2.2 Build with Clod Axles & Snow Plow

I wanted to add "Scale" to my title but I know Clod axles are not very scale, but I have the axles so why not use them. Plus I wanted to attempt a "scale" build using Clod axles and utilize the dual motors as I plan on using the water proof EVX2 esc and it's 16.8v of power :D, I plan on adding a plow so I want the extra juice for moving snow.

Also going to attempt to build a crew cab F350 body from two Tamiya hi-lift bodies, it's a first for me, kind of scared to cut up some bodies but I'm also looking forward to the challenge, I'll also be building the chassis and links myself.

I'll start with pics of some of the parts I got yesterday:

F350 body & decal kit
Tamia parts trees with the lenses and tailight pieces
Fender Flares
rc4wd 4" shocks
Pro-line 2.2 Flat Iron tires

These shocks look amazing!

Compressed

Close up of the 2.2 Flat Irons

I'll get more pics up of the project soon.

Before I start the build I knew the axles needed some attention because last time I ran them I heard some noises from the axles, so it was time to break them down for some service.

First Axle broke down and cleaned up, you can see my new Hot Racing axle tubes on the bottom, those are my old Integy tubes on top, but more on those later:

Good thing I opened up the axles as I found 3 blown bearings

The outer bearing case still stuck in the Integy Knuckle

I had some extra bearings to replace them with, along with some new gears and the HR spool gear re-installed

Now back to the HR axle tubes. I picked these up as the end of the tube where the knuckle mounts is a lot shorter in height compared to the Integy's, this will allow them to fit inside a 2.2 wheel.

Here you can see the huge difference in height...

Both tubes installed and ready to go, these are really nice.

More to come....

Next up are the HR knuckles (bottom) that will replace the Integy's (top). As you can see the HR's are a lot smaller in height which allow 2.2 wheels to fit over them. Also notice the little bit of blue in the HR's, they use to be all blue but I used Easy-Off oven cleaner to remove the blue anodizing. It didn't take all of it off so I then used some Drano crystals in a bucket of water, that pretty much took care of the remaing anodize.

Notice how much slimmer the HR knuckles are

All drive shafts installed in the HR knuckles

Knuckle mounted to axle tube, this was a mock up with TLT shocks before I got the rc4wd shocks

I cut up some bodies last night :D Everything went pretty good, one side was a perfect cut, the other side will need to be worked a little. But for my first time it went well, still a lot more to.

The new Hi-lift body beside the old Jugernaut cab. I always thought they were indentical, but the wheel well arches are slighty different. I found this out right away when I went to mount the fender flares I bought for a Hi-lift to the Jug body and they wouldn't fit. But the part of the cab I need from the Jug is identical.

Surgery lines, I went with a straight 90 degree line and didn't follow the door seem line that slighty curves in. If later on I decide to follow the door seem it's a lot easier to cut it then it is to add it back :D

Let the cutting begin

Nice cut for a hack saw

Next on the choping block is the Jug cab

Test fit

Going to be nice and long

Lots more work left to do, finish cutting the pillars and start building the roof and door trim from styrene.

I got most of the green paint sanded off the donar cab, I also cut it down shorter and made another cut along the roof to remove the pillars and curved section of the roof line.

Here it is bonded togeather

Marked a cut line to remove the curved section of the door, this will make fitting the fill piece easier.

Section cut out

The fill piece being test fitted and roughed in

After some cutting and filing

So here it is with some spot putty waiting for sanding. Also notice I extended the window trim into the styrene , still have to do the curves thou.

And after some sanding, as you can see just about all of the bondo in sanded away

Here it is after a light coat of primer, still has tape over the door handles. I still have to brace the inside and fill a couple pin holes, but I'm going to take a break from the body and start building the chassis. The body was a lot of work but I'm happy with how it turned out for being my first time. I'll probably use a sheet of styrene and run the full length of the roof so the body can handle a roll over.

Got a start on the chassis

Wheels & tires mounted

Body test fit, I have to trim down the shock mounts as they're keeping the rear from going down level.

Almost forgot the flares, they're just taped on for now

Still lots left to do but it's nice to see the truck sit on it's own now

One bad thing about living in Canada is the wait for parts from the USA, but I did get a few in today :)

I made a battery tray mount out of a sheet of aluminum

Underneath

AE battery cups secure the 8.4v batteries

Batteries with the body on

Frame mounted steering servo, this is just roughed in for now. I'll be adding a cross member here to straighten and strengthen it.

Side shot

With body on

Got a start on the windows. This will be the front window, the rear window section cut and removed

Placed in body, you can see on the bottom mount that I had to shave some of it away to clear the body post

This will be the rear window, front windshield cut and removed. Also notice the two holes I drilled towards the rear on top. This is too allow the window to move forward inside the cab, this is needed so the side glass fully fills the window frame

Both windows in body. I still have to cut away what will be the new rear window and bring it to the rear, and also clean up where the windows meet and glue them togeather

Woooooo windows :D

Installed the mirrors

Some new meats :D I wanted something more aggresive then the Flat Irons so I went with the Mud Slingers

Finished the rear windows and reinforced the body with styrene

Detailed the tail lights with a red Sharpie

And some LED's

Time to work on that shiny Integy gear box

After some sand blasting, this should give something for the paint to stick to

Some flat black paint

Next up was some flat black paint for the chassis

Some Tamiya red for the cab and i sprayed the under side of the cab with flat black

The paint didn't lay down very nice, I dont think I used the right primer, thru all the orange peel is the reflection from my light

But after some polishing the shine is coming thru...much better now :D

Next up will be detailing window trim, project is almost finished.

Not 100% complete here, but I wanted to get a few pics of the truck outside. Still have to finish painting the rear tail gate, detail window trim, apply Ford emblems.

I really truly believe this is one of my favorite trucks on this site. I just love it, looks amazing having the 4 door and the paint is awesome.

Such a good job my friend! :tmb It is now my PC desktop image....

I need to work on a hard body like that, they look so much better than lexan.
