1st WK = Build Questions

Hi Guys...great information and builds, I have searched!...but being my first WK project my questions are: can I use the stock axle shock mounts, as I am building my own links, rotating the mounts 90% makes a loose fit...also when I mock up a center axle servo mount and straight links there seems be be little clearance room for up and down shock movement...thanks - Steve

Rotating the shock mounts will make for more a loose fit like you said. A better solution are the Crawler King shock mounts.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HPI-Servo-Mount-High-Link-Bracket-Set-Wheely-King-HPI85632-/360911781152?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item540804bd20

When you use these mounts with the stock links, you get about an 11" wheelbase, compared to the stock 9.75". Because the wheelbase is longer, you'll have to make about a 3/8" spacer for the top Y-link, and you'll need a longer screw where it goes through the mount on the back of the axle. If you use the stock steering, you'll need a longer steering rod end. I use a standoff and a metal rod end for the extra length.

I used an M3 X 20mm long hex standoff from McMaster Carr, p/n: 93655A824 http://www.mcmaster.com/#catalog/120/3266/=ru6pmb and a 3mm aluminum rod end from Ebay, that I think was made by Integy.

If you go the axle mounted steering servo route, you're going to lose front end travel, as the servo will come up and slap the underside of the chassis. No much way around that, but a lot of guys do it. I prefer the stock style steering for extra travel.

There's more info in this thread... http://www.rcmt.net/forums/showthread.php?25760-Finally-took-the-plunge
and there are links to my other 2 builds at the end.

yeah grab the crawler mounts or just grab my axle case's with skids for about the same price but you would get two full spare case's out of it.

the wk's mounts are also a different orientation then the crawler.

the mounts on the top of the king are front/back and the crawler is left/right.

you also end up with more mounting holes so it is easier to get diffferent length suspension links in the also.

i have a servo mount(not for sale) that puts the servo out over the front of the axle on one of my trucks. i cannot remember who produced it but it is much better than the chassis mounted servo plus you dont have to worry about losing any suspension travel. if i can find who made it ill post it up. it may have been rcguy or esp.

also grab the crawler king kit. 12" wheelbase works perfect with Monster Jam bodies from traxxas and bolts right on without having to deal with anything else. cant beat it for $45-50 on ebay.

level3rc on ebay makes a great 2 piece version keeping the servo as low as possible on the axle center

Yup, that's what I used on my build, still needing to get another one for the rear as the offset servo didn't work like I need it too.

I built a Wheely King monster as well, and agree with everything said above.

First step you want to take is getting the crawler king mounts for that longer wheelbase, that short wheelbase it comes stock with definitely doesn't allow for you do to anything with it. Next I always recommend getting rid of that y-link completely and converting the truck to a true 4-link truck by using a 4 link mount that attaches to the differentials. Then lose the stock steering set up and get the Level3RC axle mounts, and the CPE servos, they are much stronger than the stock HPI servo. I tried using the HPI servo for my rear steering and it wasn't stiff enough to not turn when it wasn't on. Definitely make you some aluminum 4 links in place of the plastic ones, and I don't know if anyone mentioned it yet, but you will need to grab some T-Maxx/E-Maxx driveshafts once you extend the WB. Not only are they long enough but are also thicker than the stock WK ones and work better overall.

Take a look at the first part of this video, I go over my WK pretty well, going to have a more detailed video up here in a little bit!
